What is SME?

SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) is an ING Group Initiative which is targeting the digital transformation of our Business Banking at group level. The aim is to provide a foundation for global development of solutions and features for Business Banking clients. This will enable us to unlock synergies between countries in the digital transformation and avoid duplication going forward.


The Mission

For the SME Project we are looking for a Chapter Lead coordinate our new product owners chapter. The roles included in this chapter will be PO and CJE.

Each PO from the chapter is assigned to one feature squad. Our feature squads are able to fulfil internal consumer need in a one-stop-shop-way; understanding the customer journey, changing the API, updating the front end, and fully productizing the new product feature.

Each CJE from the chapter is assigned per feature in the Techincal design phase of development process.


Your Day-to-Day:

  • First of all, you are a passionate, hands-on PO or CJE;
  • You are the formal senior PO or CJE spending 60% of your time on content tasks related to the domain;
  • You help your team develop through coaching, mentoring and constant feedback;
  • Together with your IT Area Lead you set targets for each team member;
  • You are in charge of both „what” and  „how”, - what is the scope of entire SME Area and how to design an efficient, high quality solution based on the requested functionality;
  • You work with the recruitment team to attract, onboard and retain top talent (guideline HR activities: 40%, Engineering activities 60%);
  • You are responsible for HR related activities: 1 to 1 meetings with your team members, performance management, etc.


Knowledge and experience:

  • Minimum 5 year(s) experience working as a Business Analyst/Technical Product Owner / Technical Project Manager in a software development environment.
  • Master degree or equivalent through experience within banking industry.
  • Experience in working within an application development team;
  • Integrity, communication, teamwork, ability to cope with change, planning and organizing, problem solving, and customer oriented behavior
  • Solid Agile experience with SCRUM and / or Kanban methodologies
  • Experience on working with distributed teams, international projects and multicultural business environment
  • Ability to share knowledge and educate team in the business domain, understand and promote different technologies
  • Proven ability to define a set of requirements that pinpoint business challenges and identify technical and business changes required to address them.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely across different software development and the business teams.
  • Proactively validate with the stakeholders the added value and identify new opportunities, features and improvements
  • A ‘go to’ person for the team when it comes to clarity and domain information.
  • Analytical thinking
  • Excellent communication skills, pro-active and easy to approach attitude
  • Proficient level of English, any other language is a bonus
  • Availability to travel once per month, interact with different cultures and switch context in short term


Nice to have skills:

  • Work experience in banking domain, preferably SME domain
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Docker and OpenShift is a plus
  • Experience with Microservices and System Design knowledge is a plus
  • Understanding of RESTful web services and/or experience with API development;
  • Experience with change management and incident management via Service-Now
